Review: Enough Said (2013) – Nicole Holofcener (In Theatres)

ENOUGH SAID: Directed by Nicole Holofcener

– ENOUGH SAID is about Albert (James Gandolfini) and Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), two middle aged divorced singles who form a relationship with each other.  What they don’t know is that Eva’s new friend and client, Marianne (Catherine Keener) is Albert’s ex-wife.  What Marianne has to say about Albert to Eva makes it hard for her to look at Albert the same way.

– After watching the trailer I kind of got turned off seeing this because it looked like it was only geared towards older women.  After some great reception at TIFF and mostly positive reviews, it made me want to see it again.

– Even though it’s better suited for people in their 40’s-50’s, it’s a good enough film that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

– I originally wanted to see this because of James Gandolfini.  I haven’t seen all of his stuff, but I’ve never seen him play this kind of character.  He shows a different side to himself that you don’t get to see when he plays those tough guy characters.  I thought he was great, and it really displays what kind of talent he had as an actor.

– Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who I haven’t seen much of other than on Seinfeld, is perfect in her role as Eva.  She’s very likeable and is able to keep the audience on her side throughout the film.

– I would’ve never guessed that there would be a romantic comedy with the couple being Tony Soprano and Elaine Benes…but it works well as they both have good chemistry together.

– The additions of the two daughters brought a different storyline to the film.  Especially parents of teenagers, I think they could appreciate and relate to what Albert and Eva are dealing with as they are both losing their daughters to far away colleges.

What makes ENOUGH SAID so great, and the main reason why I think it’s being so well received by critics is because of the performances from James Gandolfini and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.  They both have great chemistry together, and their characters are both very likeable, making it easy for the audience to want them to be happy.  The film deals with real life subjects that could be easily related to by lots of people out there, however, even though I couldn’t relate to anything in the film, I still really enjoyed it.  This was one of the first times I was able to watch James Gandolfini on screen and totally forget that he was ever Tony Soprano, and other than one more movie he filmed before passing away…it’s really sad that we won’t be able to see him on screen again.

ENOUGH SAID: 7.5/10
